Time

We all have our point of views to what time means to us individually. One of my favorite quotes on “Time” comes from Steve Jobs:

“My favorite things in life don’t cost any money. It’s really clear that the most precious resource we all have is time.”

As I prepare to turn fifty (50) years old on September 10, 2015, I finally have a clear understanding to what my grandmother would often repeat to me when I would spend my afternoons with her just talking about life and food. She would tell me, “Make sure wherever you place your time that you receive the best end result that God would want for you in your life. You can never get that time back.”

I spent 16 years working in oil and gas believing it was ok that this is what I would be doing the reminder of my life. I had an awesome job working as and operation manager leading a group of people every day. However, at the ripe age of 37 years old I realized I enjoyed my job, however, I didn’t love my job.

In my spare time I would cook and experiment on various recipes, sharing with family and friends. One day, I was enjoying a conversation with a friend of 25 plus years expressing to him that I was thinking of attending the Art Institute of Houston for Culinary to become a Chef. He told me, ‘Bro, all we have is time, so make life worth the time.’

I sat down and examined what brought me true happiness, which I discovered was my passion for cooking. My time invested, I honestly landed on my purpose of life before I reached fifty years of age and I am forever grateful.

I realize those 16 years God placed me in corporate America was primarily to prepare me to own my own business, therefore, the time I invested, I am now reaping the rewards.

Last fall I renamed my company The Harvest Group 937. Basically, my life definition is like a harvest, you have to plant the seeds, water the seeds, pull the weeds, deal with the weather and in the end you will receive the harvest. The 937 at the end of Group comes from the scripture Matthew 9:37, which states, “Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few.”

I Love this passage because I often refer back to it every day of my life. When I am cooking or just baking my famous pound cake, I am planting seeds in people’s lives as they partake in my food. So, the time I dedicate to mixing ingredients and beating the cake, to placing it in oven for baking at 325 degrees F for an hour and thirty minutes, to the final presentation, this all gives me a full understanding to the word “time.” Especially when I witness the joy on my clients faces.

In closing, we are all granted time each day by Gods’ grace. So, go forth and work your harvest. My life is true testimony to what God can bless you with in your daily walk.
